Typhoon Opong: Malaysia extends condolences, ready to assist Philippines

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 — Malaysia has extended its deepest condolences and sympathies to the government and people of the Philippines, especially victims and families affected by Tropical Cyclone Opong that has battered the country on the heels of Super Typhoon Ragasa.

The Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) said it is closely monitoring the typhoon through the Embassy of Malaysia in Manila.

Internationally known as Bualoi, Typhoon Opong has brought torrential rain that has resulted in the displacement of hundreds of families. Wisma Putra is currently coordinating with the relevant agencies on possible assistance to be rendered to the people of the republic.

"As of today, the typhoon was hovering in the central Philippines and was moving westward at 35km per hour with maximum winds of 110km per hour. The typhoon is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by September 27," it said in a statement today.

To date, no Malaysians have been reported affected by the typhoon.

"Malaysians in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and follow the latest updates and guidance provided by the local authorities," Wisma Putra said.

It encouraged Malaysians who have not registered themselves or updated on their whereabouts to do so immediately at the e-Konsular webpage.

Malaysians requiring consular assistance may contact the Embassy of Malaysia in Manila at +63 2 8662 8200 / +63 917 864 0761 or via email at mwmanila@kln.gov.my.

The embassy is located at Salcedo Village, 107 Tordesillas, Makati, 1227 Metro Manila, the Philippines.
