KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 — The Madani government has set the RON95 price at RM1.99 per litre for Malaysians starting September 30, said Prime Minster Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The reduction from RM2.05 per litre was made possible through targeted subsidies under Budi Madani RON95 (BUDI95).
This was announced by Anwar today at his monthly meeting with Prime Minister's Department staff.
Malaysians — regardless of their income status — will be eligible for the subsidy if they have a valid driver’s license. Citizens will receive a monthly allowance of 300 litres of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 a litre, except for e-hailing drivers, who can apply for a higher petrol limit.
These benefits and privileges are given as an appreciation and recognition of the spirit of Merdeka and Malaysia Day, as well as to honour Malaysians.
“From September 30, non-citizens and large companies will no longer be eligible for the subsidy, as it is meant solely for personal use. They will have to pay the non-subsidised price of about RM2.60 per litre, while Malaysian citizens will continue to enjoy the subsidised price of RM1.99 per litre,” he said, as reported by Bernama.
He added that as a gesture of appreciation, police and military personnel will enjoy the lower price from this Saturday, ahead of the official implementation date, while the B40 group, who are recipients of the Rahmah Cash Contribution (STR), will enjoy the subsidised price from Sunday.
This is to allow the public to gradually adapt to the new subsidy mechanism.
For those who are digitally literate, Anwar said there are alternative payment options such as Touch ‘n Go and oil company apps like Petronas’ Setel, which do away with the need to use a MyKad for every transaction.
Over 16 million Malaysians will benefit from the drop in the petrol price, said Anwar.
