AIPA passes 42 resolutions on climate action, women and youth empowerment

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 — The 46th General Assembly of the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), which concluded today, approved 42 resolutions covering a wide range of political, economic, and social issues.

These resolutions focus on political-security cooperation, economic integration, social inclusion, climate action, and the empowerment of women and youth. They also aim to strengthen AIPA’s cooperation with Asean and observer parliaments.

AIPA 2025 president Tan Sri Johari Abdul, who is also Dewan Rakyat speaker, emphasised that these resolutions are significant and can be presented at each member’s parliament for discussion through special select committees or caucuses.

“These resolutions will drive parliaments to address the agreed issues, providing a foundation for lawmaking.

“While the lawmaking process may take time, it is crucial that the thought process occurs simultaneously across Asean,” he told a press conference following the assembly at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

At the assembly, reports and resolutions were presented from various committees, including the Political Affairs, Economic Affairs, and Social Affairs Committees, as well as the AIPA Women Parliamentarians (WAIPA) and Young Parliamentarians (YPA) meetings.

The session also marked the official end of Malaysia’s AIPA presidency, with the handover of the role to the Philippines.

The symbolic handover was marked by the signing of documents and the passing of the gavel and AIPA flag from Johari, to Philippine delegation head Raymond Democrito C. Mendoza.

The position of AIPA secretary-general was handed over from sixth secretary-general Siti Rozaimeriyanty Abdul Rahman of Brunei to Chem Widhya of Cambodia.

The assembly, which began Thursday, drew representatives from nine AIPA members and 14 observers, including Algeria and Spain, as well as the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference.
