SEPANG, Sept 20 — The Sepang Municipal Council (MPSepang) has been urged to take a more aggressive approach in promoting local products by capitalising on Sepang’s strategic position as Malaysia’s main gateway.
Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said this is crucial to multiplying the local economic value and ensuring that tourism events in the district serve more than just as entertainment festivals.
“We want this two-day event to be an environmental education hub, to showcase unique local products, and to elevate the ‘Sepang at Large’ brand,” he said when officiating the sixth edition of the Bagan Lalang Beach Festival @ Sepang 2025 today.
Amirudin noted that the biennial festival, organised by MPSepang for the past 12 years, is expected to draw around 20,000 visitors this year, in line with efforts to make Sepang a high-impact tourism destination.
He added that the district holds vast development potential thanks to its proximity to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), though development efforts have faced challenges due to the discovery of old bombs in several villages.
“The state government will work with major landowners to find solutions and design a sustainable development plan for Sepang,” Amirudin said.
The Menteri Besar also suggested incorporating cultural activities rooted in local traditions, like wau kapal (giant kite) competitions, into the state’s tourism agenda to showcase Selangor’s identity to both domestic and international visitors.
At the same time, he confirmed that the state received a proposal to host the RXZ programme last year and will be reviewing it comprehensively.
“We have the Sepang Circuit and the People’s Circuit in Kuala Selangor. Both complement each other and have produced several motorsport champions.
"Therefore, this industry will be given due attention in the 2026 Selangor Budget and the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2),” Amirudin said.
