KUANTAN, Sept 20 — The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) is prepared to mobilise its personnel and assets to flood-affected areas during the upcoming monsoon season.

Chief of Defence Force Gen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar said a range of preparations had been undertaken, including monitoring flood-prone locations and conducting simulations ahead of the season.

“Local leaders and brigade commanders have assessed the areas and are aware of the measures to be implemented. We are also always prepared to mobilise the necessary assets if required.

“Our main task is to assist the people and local authorities in managing the flood crisis,” he said during a press conference in conjunction with the 92nd MAF Anniversary celebration at the Kuantan Air Base today.

Also present were Army Chief Gen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, Navy Chief Admiral Tan Sri Dr Zulhelmy Ithnain, and Air Force Chief Gen Datuk Seri Muhamad Norazlan Aris.

Nizam added that nearly 600 personnel and officers were deployed to assist flood and landslide victims in Sabah.

Commenting on the MAF Day celebration, he said it was a lively event, with members of the public arriving as early as 6.30am at the air base to witness a dynamic demonstration showcasing the synergy of MAF’s assets and capabilities in defending the nation’s sovereignty.

The demonstration also highlighted MAF’s credibility and capabilities in fulfilling its primary mission of safeguarding the country’s security and sovereignty.

“In addition, I do not want this to be seen merely as a carnival. What is showcased here must leave an impact on visitors, allowing them to feel closer to the MAF and inspiring more to join the force,” Nizam said.

Also held in conjunction with the celebration was the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Carnival, a two-day event running until tomorrow.

Meanwhile, in his speech, he said the MAF would continue to strengthen defence diplomacy with friendly nations as part of a comprehensive approach to safeguarding the country’s peace, stability, and sovereignty.

“The MAF also contributes to global peace through its involvement in United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations, Asean initiatives, and natural disaster relief efforts,” Nizam said.

In the meantime, he also highlighted veteran welfare, noting that the Veterans Affairs Department, together with the MAF, would continue to explore opportunities to improve the standard of living for veterans, including issues related to outstanding allowance claims.
