KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 — Selangor is expediting the implementation of short-term flood mitigation intervention projects in hotspot areas to reduce the risk of disasters ahead of the monsoon transition phase.
Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the effort is spearheaded by state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato' Izham Hashim over the past three months via a series of site visits to high-risk locations.
“We have already discussed this at the recent State Executive Council meeting. There are two particularly important measures, namely infrastructure. I have requested that all projects, especially the urgent ones we have identified, be accelerated.
“Dato’ Izham has already been on the ground for the past three to four months to ensure the projects can be completed,” he said.
Amirudin was speaking to the press after visiting the Selangor Pavilion in conjunction with the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (Mihas) 2025 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) today.
He added that the focus areas include Klang, Kuala Selangor, Sepang, Petaling Jaya, and Shah Alam, which have been identified as high flood-risk zones.
The Menteri Besar also hopes the Federal government’s long-term mitigation projects, like the Hulu Langat 2 Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB), can be expedited.
“Long-term projects like RTB Hulu Langat 2 and others, we really hope can be accelerated, because otherwise, incidents such as what happened last week in Sungai Serai will recur.
“That is the impact when our flood mitigation projects are not yet fully completed. However, the immediate intervention projects we have identified can help reduce the effects,” Amirudin said.
Earlier this week, several areas in Hulu Langat, including Batu 16, Batu 18, Kampung Sungai Lui, Kampung Sungai Serai, and Sungai Pangsun, were hit by floods after continuous heavy rainfall lasting several hours.
