Former cashier claims trial to CBT, money laundering charges involving over half mln

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 — A former supermarket cashier pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court today to 14 counts of criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving RM568,200 from a Touch N' Go eWallet terminal machine belonging to the supermarket.

Nur Atiqah Asyirah Muhamad Fauzi, 28, was charged on two counts with misusing the terminal entrusted to her by the supermarket. She allegedly withdrew RM98,800 in Touch N' Go PINs, which were transferred to her personal eWallet account between January 7, 2023, and July 9 last year.

The charges, framed under Section 408 of the Penal Code, carry a penalty of up to 14 years in prison, whipping, and a fine.

She also faces 12 additional charges for transferring RM469,400 from illegal activities into her own and her family and friends' Touch N' Go eWallet accounts between January 2023 and August 2024.

These charges fall under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

If convicted, the accused could face up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to RM5 million or five times the value of the illegal funds.

Deputy Public Prosecutor M. Saravanan did not offer bail as the offences are non-bailable, leaving the decision to the court's discretion. However, he requested bail of RM50,000 for the CBT charges and another RM50,000 for the money laundering charges.

Atiqah's lawyer Ainul Azwan @ Ainul Azirahman Ainul Jamal requested a lower bail, stating that the accused earns only RM1,000 a month as a kindergarten teacher and has family responsibilities, including caring for a father with chronic diabetes.

Judge Azrul Darus granted bail at RM100,000 with one surety and set additional conditions, including reporting monthly to the Anti-Money Laundering Division at Bukit Aman and surrendering her passport.

The next mention is set for November 18.
