MB advises prioritising needs, avoiding heavy financial burdens

SHAH ALAM, Sept 18 — The people must be wise in distinguishing between needs and wants to avoid being burdened with high expenses and financial problems, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

This is a major challenge, but one that must be emphasised, given that Malaysia practises a free market.

As such, he urged every citizen to know financial law, spending habits, and the ability to list their needs to ensure safe expenditure and money management.

“We live in a country that provides freedom to the market. The more spending, the more goods and services are purchased, the more it drives the local economy. This actually gives us a guideline for exercising self-control.

“Our government does not determine the market like under communist or socialist systems. It provides great freedom to consumers, offering opportunities to enjoy goods more freely.

“This is where we need citizens and communities who are knowledgeable and who share responsibility,” Amirudin said.

The Menteri Besar was speaking at the officiation of the Selangor Financial Literacy Programme for Civil Servants organised by the State Insolvency Department. Also present was Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

During the event, 400 personnel took part, including Federal and state government officers as well as representatives of private agencies and statutory bodies. All were given exposure to the importance of financial management.
