SHAH ALAM, Sept 12 — Application and registration for volunteers for the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026 in Selangor will start early next year.
State executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said participation is open specifically to Selangor youth, including secondary school and university students.
Najwan, who is also Sukma XXII Implementation Committee chairman, said the panel will activate the Selangor Volunteer (SERVE) team under the State Sports Council and Team Selangor to provide the required number of volunteers.
“Volunteers involved will be provided with suitable training modules, besides being equipped with basic skills and knowledge on how to welcome guests, proper protocols and such.
“This is crucial as they will be upholding the state’s image (as the host). I have discussed with the Selangor Sukma Secretariat and they are in contact with local authorities regarding (training modules),” he said at a media conference to announce the 15th Sukan Selangor (Sukses) here today.
Najwan had reportedly said the organisers are aiming to draw the participation of 3,000 volunteers to make the Sukma and Para Sukma 2026 a success.
He said Sukma 2026 would be a platform for volunteers to gain valuable knowledge in welcoming guests, managing various needs, and organising national sports tournaments.
Najwan also said Selangor’s preparations for the biennial games are at nearly 60 per cent, including the upgrading and repair of existing facilities, and said all preparations are to be completed by April.
Meanwhile, he said Sukses, which would be held from September 17 to October 5, would see the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) play host to athletes from nine districts competing in 11 sports — lawn bowls, taekwondo, sepak takraw, netball, rugby, pencak silat, athletics, basketball, volleyball, archery and table tennis.
Over 2,300 athletes aged below 20 are expected to battle it out in the 211 events, with Sukses using the Sukma format to give athletes early exposure in the run-up to the 2026 games.
In the previous Sukses held in Hulu Langat in 2023, Petaling emerged overall champions after bagging 76 medals, including 33 gold.
