KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — The commotion during the eviction operation at Kampung Sungai Baru here should not have happened as the residents had long been given eviction notices, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said he would ask Titiwangsa MP Datuk Seri Johari Ghani, who has been appointed to lead Umno’s special task force to improve the Urban Renewal Bill (PSB), to address the matter.
“Although we planned to hold a convention on the PSB Bill, we will continue to take immediate action in line with the existing legal system,” he told reporters after delivering a keynote address at the Global Islamic Finance Summit here today.
Earlier, Dang Wangi police chief Suzilme Affendy Sulaiman suffered a head injury after being hit by a rock thrown by an unidentified person, during an operation to cut off power supply to Kampung Sungai Baru.
Videos of a clash between security forces and residents also went viral on social media.
The operation was launched under a court order for the demolition of houses in the area.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim condemned the assault on Suzilme as despicable.
