KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 — Japan has welcomed the agreement between Cambodia and Thailand on the mechanism for implementing the ceasefire, including the cessation of all attacks, which was reached during a recent meeting in Malaysia.
Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya expressed high appreciation for the diplomatic efforts undertaken by all parties involved in reaching the agreement.
“Japan considers that a sound relationship between Cambodia and Thailand is extremely important for stability and development in the region,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Japan has consistently worked to encourage both countries to de-escalate the situation, adding that the Japanese government will continue to support the steady implementation of the ceasefire agreement and further de-escalation efforts in coordination with relevant countries.
Meanwhile, Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Shikata Noriyuki said Japan wholeheartedly commends the diplomatic efforts and leadership demonstrated by Malaysia as Asean chair in achieving this agreement.
He said Japan welcomed the recent agreement reached between Cambodia and Thailand in Malaysia on a mechanism for the implementation of the ceasefire.
“Japan wishes to continue playing a proactive and constructive role in maintaining this ceasefire in close cooperation with Malaysia, which is playing a valuable role as Asean chair,” Noriyuki wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
He added that conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia disrupt cross-border supply chains established by Japanese companies.
As tensions mounted along the Cambodia-Thailand border in late July 2025, Malaysia, serving as Asean chair, stepped forward as a neutral and constructive mediator.
Both countries agreed to a ceasefire that was brokered by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 28, ending the five-day conflict that destroyed the peace in the northern part of Cambodia.
A landmark General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, hosted by Malaysia, ended in Kuala Lumpur on a positive note on Thursday (August 7), after both governments agreed to several ceasefire conditions to avoid further escalation of the conflict.
