HTAR fire: Safety inspection underway at Emergency Dept

KLANG, July 23 — A comprehensive safety inspection is being carried out at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital’s (HTAR) Emergency and Trauma Department (ETD), including checks on its electrical system and medical gas pipelines, after yesterday’s fire.

The Selangor State Health Department (JKNS) said in a statement today that the Sri Andalas Fire and Rescue Department is also conducting a probe to identify the cause of the fire.

It said that based on preliminary assessments, only about 1 per cent of the red zone ward was affected by the incident, with no injuries reported.

A total of 126 patients who were at the ETD at the time of the fire were safely transferred to wards in the hospital’s main building, and treatment is continuing as usual.

“Staff mobilisation was also carried out immediately to ensure uninterrupted service. The affected area has been fully evacuated, and safety measures have been implemented by restricting access to the affected zone.

“The ETD is still providing emergency services for critical walk-ins at HTAR,” it said.

It added that for ambulance cases, patients would be redirected to nearby hospitals through the activation of an ambulance diversion system.

“The JKNS assures the safety of patients, staff, and the public remains a top priority. The concern and cooperation of all parties are greatly appreciated.

“We urge the public to refrain from making any speculation or assumption until the official investigation is completed. Any further information will be announced from time to time through JKNS’ official channels,” the statement read.

At 5.05pm yesterday, a minor fire broke out at the HTAR ETD. The Fire and Rescue Department was alerted at 5.13pm, but the blaze was extinguished by hospital staff before firefighters’ arrival.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the fire was sparked by a switch socked in the red zone ward.
