KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 — The government is expected to table legislation for a national artificial intelligence (AI) regulatory framework by the second half of next year, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.
He said the relevant report and recommendations are currently being prepared.
“I hope to table something in Parliament, and I believe there likely will be, as I expect legislation will be needed to cover certain areas.”

“I hope to get that legislation in by the second half of next year,” Gobind told a press conference after officiating the Selangor Twin Accelerator Programme 2025 at the Asia Business School today.
He added that his ministry is awaiting a report following a series of meetings, after which the findings and recommendations will be presented to the Cabinet, where a decision on the governance approach will be made based on its response.
“The question is what kind of governance we need — whether it is going to be through legislation, regulations, or mere standards. I think this is something that we need to think about very carefully,” Gobind said.
While AI and other emerging technologies hold great promise, the minister stressed the importance of preparing for their associated risks.
“Technology provides us with great opportunities, but there are also risks that we need to consider. Risks will present themselves in different ways across different technologies,” he said.
Previously, it was reported that a full report outlining Malaysia’s proposed AI regulatory framework is expected to be completed by the end of June.
Gobind had said that the ministry is preparing a detailed report on the legal requirements related to AI to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat, with a study on AI, initiated by the National AI Office, to be submitted to his ministry soon.
