SHAH ALAM, July 1 — Selangor remained the largest contributor to Malaysia’s economy, accounting for 26.2 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2024, an increase from 25.9 per cent the previous year.

According to the Statistics Department’s (DOSM) latest GDP by State report released today, Selangor recorded a year-on-year growth of 6.3 per cent, well above the national average of 5.1 per cent.

Selangor’s GDP was valued at RM432.1 billion, ahead of Kuala Lumpur (RM265.8 billion or 16.1 per cent) and Johor (RM158 billion or 9.6 per cent).

Together, the three states made up 51.9 per cent of the national GDP, which totalled RM1.65 trillion.

This marks the third time Selangor’s economic activity has exceeded the 25 per cent mark, following similar performances in 2023 and 2022.

In 2023, Selangor’s contribution of RM406.1 billion was also the first time any state surpassed the RM400 billion threshold.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari had set a target of reaching RM500 billion in economic activity within the next few years.

According to the DOSM, Selangor also led the economy across several sectors last year, contributing 33.8 per cent to national construction, 32.9 per cent to manufacturing, and 26.9 per cent to services.

In comparison, Kuala Lumpur accounted for 24.9 per cent of economic activity in the services sector, followed by Johor (8.7 per cent) and Penang (6 per cent).

Johor, meanwhile, emerged the leading state in agriculture with a 17.1 per cent share, while Sarawak topped mining and quarrying at 31.6 per cent.

Sarawak, the fourth-largest economy with a 9 per cent share of the national GDP, grew by 3.9 per cent.

The DOSM also recorded that 45.3 per cent of mining output was classified under the “supra” category, comprising activities not tied to any specific state.

In terms of growth, Johor posted the highest rate at 6.4 per cent, narrowly ahead of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur at 6.3 and 6.2 per cent, respectively.

Pahang (5.7 per cent) and Labuan (5.4 per cent) were the only other states to exceed the national average.

Meanwhile, Penang logged a 4.8 per cent growth, followed by Perak and Negeri Sembilan (4.6 per cent each), and Melaka (4.44 per cent).
