BANGKOK, June 19 — Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra-led Pheu Thai Party has affirmed its support for the government’s approach in resolving the ongoing border dispute with Cambodia through peaceful methods, amid tensions within the ruling coalition.
Pheu Thai, in a statement issued late last night, asserted that protecting the country’s sovereignty and the interests of the Thai people remains its mission.
“The party supports the government's approach, involving the security sector, the military, and the Foreign Ministry, emphasising peaceful methods in resolving issues.
“In situations like this, no force is greater than the unity of the Thai people for the sake of Thailand,” it said.
Pheu Thai’s statement followed a decision by Bhumjaithai, the second-largest party in the ruling coalition to withdraw from the government, citing dissatisfaction with government actions affecting Thai sovereignty.
Bhumjaithai in a statement earlier yesterday also announced that all its eight ministers have resigned, effective June 19.
The party accused Paetongtarn of "damaging conduct" following a leaked phone conversation with Cambodia's Senate President Hun Sen on June 15.
Following Bhumjaithai’s withdrawal, the Pheu Thai-led coalition still commands a majority in the 500-seat House of Representatives in Thailand.
Pheu Thai remains the largest party in the coalition with 142 seats.
