SUBANG JAYA, April 9 — The Selangor Women’s Welfare and Charity Organisation (Pekawanis) spent nearly two hours visiting victims of the Petronas gas pipeline explosion at the temporary relief centre in Masjid Putra Heights today.

Its president Datin Seri Masdiana Mohamad said the visit — alongside the Selangor Taska Association and several representatives from non-governmental organisations — was a gesture of support for those affected by the tragic incident.

“We met with the victims and offered them moral support. Sometimes, they do not just need material aid — they also need emotional encouragement to recover.

“So today, we listened to their stories and offered words of encouragement, as many are still grieving and in shock. They also expressed gratitude for the assistance extended by various parties.

“The help may not come all at once, but it can support them for the first six months as they rebuild their lives. I hope all parties will continue to support the victims,” she said.

Speaking to the pres after the visit, Masdiana added that they also distributed drawing and coloring supplies, reading materials for children, as well as prayer mats and female prayer garments for adults.

“These items may seem simple, but they bring joy to the recipients. We also provided sejadah and telekung for the adults. Last week, we contributed Hari Raya (Aidilfitri) clothing,” she said.

The Petronas gas pipeline fire that broke out around 8.10am on April 1 sent flames more than 30 metres into the sky, with temperatures soaring to 1,000°C. It took nearly eight hours for the blaze to be fully extinguished.

The incident left 81 houses completely destroyed with structural damage exceeding 40 per cent, another 81 houses partially destroyed, 57 damaged but not burned, and 218 houses unaffected.
