Indonesia ready to temporarily accommodate 1,000 injured, orphans from Gaza

JAKARTA, April 9 — Indonesia is ready to temporarily accommodate 1,000 injured people and orphans from the Gaza Strip, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said today.

Sputnik/RIA Novosti, quoting the Jakarta Globe news portal, reported that Prabowo would be going to the Middle East to take part in negotiations on the settlement of the crisis in Gaza.

He told journalists about his intention to evacuate people from Gaza until the situation in the region is stabilised. Prabowo added that Indonesia is ready to receive 1,000 people at the first stage of the evacuation.

"We are ready to accept the injured. We will immediately send our foreign minister to consult with the Palestinian government and the parties in that region regarding the implementation," he said.

Jakarta is ready to accommodate orphans, injured people and "anyone whom the Palestinian government and relevant parties believe should be evacuated to Indonesia".

Indonesia plans to use its airplanes in the evacuation process. At the same time, Prabowo set forth certain conditions of evacuation. These conditions included an "approval by all parties".

"The evacuees may only stay in Indonesia temporarily until they have recovered. They must return to where they come from once the situation in Gaza allows it," he said.

Jakarta had also received a significant number of requests to take a more active role in settling the crisis in Gaza.

On March 18, the Israel Defence Forces resumed strikes against the enclave after almost two months of relative calm, citing Hamas' refusal to accept a United States plan to extend the ceasefire to ensure the release of the remaining hostages.

The ceasefire ended on March 1. A day later, Israel banned humanitarian aid from entering the Gaza Strip.
