WASHINGTON, April 8 — US President Donald Trump said yesterday he will impose an additional 50 per cent tariff on China if Beijing does not withdraw its retaliatory tariffs on the United States.
"Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated! Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin taking place immediately," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Now facing 54 per cent tariffs on exports to the US, the world's number 2 economy China vowed countermeasures, as did the European Union — Washington's friends and foes united in criticism of measures they fear will deal a devastating blow to global trade.
US Treasury Chief Scott Bessent earlier warned that any such retaliatory moves would only lead to escalation.
