Putra Heights fire: Water being drained from blast crater today

KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 — On the sixth day of disaster management at the site of the gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, the focus is on draining rainwater that accumulated in the crater that was left behind.

Subang Jaya police chief Wan Azlan Wan Mamat said the work is critical to allow safety assessments to resume.

“This morning, our focus remains on the crater as there is a large volume of water that must be pumped out before we can proceed with safety evaluations,” he told Bernama.

Meanwhile, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan is to hold a press conference at 4pm today at the site command post in Putra Heights.

Yesterday, Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Nor Hisyam Mohammad said the final safety assessment at the crater site is to be completed today.

Nor Hisyam said findings on the incident will be presented to the State Disaster Management Committee soon.

The Petronas gas pipeline fire, which broke out at 8.10am last Tuesday, saw flames of over 30m with temperatures reaching 1,000℃. It took nearly eight hours to extinguish the blaze.

A total of 87 homes were completely destroyed and rendered uninhabitable, while 148 other homes were damaged but will be safe after repairs.

As of yesterday, 509 families had registered at temporary relief centres.

The number is set to increase as residents return from their hometowns after Aidilfitri.

Those who have yet to register are advised to do so to ensure they are not left out of delivery. Registration closes at noon today.
