Two people injured in China's Yunnan after Myanmar quake

KUNMING, March 28 — The China Earthquake Administration has activated an emergency response mechanism for overseas earthquakes after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, reported Xinhua.

Southwest China's Yunnan Province, which borders Myanmar, has also launched emergency response mechanisms for earthquake and geological disasters, according to the provincial emergency management department.

Two people were reported injured in the city of Ruili, Dehong Dai, and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, some 300 kilometres from the epicentre. Nine people trapped in an elevator have been rescued, according to local sources.

No casualties or building collapses were reported in other cities and prefectures in Yunnan.

Two three-magnitude aftershocks were monitored in Zhenkang County in the city of Lincang at around 5.50pm, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre.

Upon feeling the quake tremors, many residents in the provincial capital Kunming rushed outdoors or remained outside to ensure their safety.

Strong tremors were felt in several prefectures and cities across Yunnan, including Xishuangbanna, Baoshan, Dehong and Pu'er, local sources told Xinhua.

In Tengchong and Ruili, ceiling lamps swayed, windows rattled, and flower pots toppled from balconies due to the tremor.

A total of 646 rescuers and 14 search dogs from the provincial fire and rescue authority have been mobilised for rescue operations.
