Singapore PM warns of scammers using his deepfake images to promote products, services

SINGAPORE, March 7 — Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has warned the public about the existence of deepfake images of him being used by scammers to promote products and services, including money-making schemes and permanent residence application services.

He reminded the public to stay vigilant online and not fall victim to the scams.

“Some of you have written in to report them, and I have also seen them on my feed. Do not respond to these scams or share any of your personal information. You can report them via ScamShield: https://www.scamshield.gov.sg/,” Wong posted on his social media pages today.

He also urged those who have fallen victim to a scam to file a police report.

This is not the first time that deepfakes of Wong have been used by scammers to promote products.

In 2023, The Straits Times reported that a deepfake video of Wong, then the deputy prime minister, was used to promote an investment scam.
