Kedah MB Sanusi freed of sedition charge over remarks against 16th Agong

SHAH ALAM, Feb 24 — The High Court has freed Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor of a sedition charge over his remarks about the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah two years ago.

Judge Datuk Aslam Zainuddin ordered Sanusi to be freed over the prosecution’s request for a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) after lawyer Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud objected to the DNAA.

“When the prosecution has expressed its intention not to proceed with the charges, it means that the case is stopped.

"So if the intention is to stop, then I request that my client be acquitted and discharged,” said the lawyer.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Masri Mohd Daud informed the court that the prosecution, having received representation from Sanusi’s lawyer, did not intend to pursue charges against the accused and withdrew the charges.

The case was fixed for hearing today.

On December 10 last year, Judge Aslam acquitted and discharged Sanusi of a sedition charge over remarks about the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj.

On July 18, 2023, he pleaded not guilty at the Selayang Sessions Court to two sedition charges over remarks about the Selangor Menteri Besar's appointment and the formation of a Unity Government during a political speech in Simpang 4, Taman Selayang Mutiara - Kampung Bendahara, Gombak, at 11pm on July 11, 2023.

The case was transferred to the Shah Alam Court for hearing.
