MPKS steps up action against illegal dumping, land reclamation

SHAH ALAM, Feb 7 — The Kuala Selangor Municipal Council (MPKS) has taken firm action against illegal dumping and land reclamation in Ijok.

MPKS President Mohamad Hanafi Basri said the council is committed to tackling the issue in Kampung Sri Sentosa and Kampung Sri Aman, where land reclamation using construction waste and domestic garbage has become increasingly rampant, posing environmental and safety risks to residents.

“To address the issue more systematically, the state government has ordered the Selangor Land and Mines Office to take action.

“It seeks to enhance coordination between agencies, ensuring more structured and integrated enforcement measures,” he said in a statement today.

He said, between 2020 and 2025, MPKS has seized 135 vehicles, issued 281 compounds, and issued 20 notices as part of its enforcement efforts.

He added that the highest number of seizures was in 2023, with 34 vehicles impounded, 75 compounds, and eight notices.

Additionally, the local authority issued Notices 7A and 7B under the National Land Code 1965 to landowners involved in illegal land reclamation.

“Despite ongoing enforcement efforts, illegal dumping and land reclamation remain persistent issues.

“Among the main challenges include high demand from landowners for land reclamation to prevent flooding, financial constraints among middle-income residents, and difficulties in identifying the actual landowners.

“Additionally, illegal dumping often takes place outside MPKS’ regular monitoring hours,” he said.

To ensure a more effective long-term solution, he said MPKS has proposed several improvements, including engagements with landowners to raise awareness of the legal and environmental impact of illegal reclamation.

The council plans to enhance enforcement through integrated operations with the Kuala Selangor Land and District Office, install signs and issue public announcements, and offer rewards to informants to encourage reports of illegal waste disposal.

It will also strengthen public education efforts by intensifying awareness campaigns on environmental protection.
