PETALING JAYA, Feb 5 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has earmarked RM300,000 for the plastic-free campaign at Ramadan bazaars under its jurisdiction.

Deputy Mayor Aznan Hassan said the campaign will offer RM15 digital coupons to visitors with reusable bags.

“This digital coupon can be redeemed at any Petaling Jaya bazaar. The council will also continue the cooking oil recycling programme, after it collected 2.5 tonnes of cooking oil last year.

“A waste separation programme was also introduced to encourage environmentally friendly initiatives, and rewards will be given to traders who practise sustainability,” he said.

Earlier today, he launched the “Joyful and Sustainable” Ramadan Bazaars 2025 at the MBPJ headquarters.

Aznan said the city council encourages micro entrepreneurs and gig workers to join Platform Selangor, GrabFood, ShopeeFood and/or Foodpanda to widen their markets and access to customers.

“In appreciation, the council will choose 20 best traders through the ‘Joyful and Sustainable’ Micro Entrepreneur Award 2025.

“They won’t only receive a cash reward of RM500, but also priority to choose stall spots for 2026 bazaars,” he said.

The MBPJ will also hold the Ramadan food basket programme to distribute excess food to needy communities through hotel operators and corporate communities.

This year, the MBPJ has prepared 1,260 bazaar stall spots in 18 locations throughout the district, with 1,107 traders having already applied for 88 per cent of the spots available.
