CYBERJAYA, Jan 23 — The government is taking a detailed, evidence-based approach to address the issue of non-revenue water (NRW), with Perlis currently reporting the highest NRW rate in the country at 62 per cent, said National Water Services Commission (SPAN) chairman Charles Santiago.
The initiative includes collaboration efforts aimed at reducing NRW, improving human capital competency and evaluating infrastructure capital expenditure of proposed projects, he said.
NRW refers to treated water that is lost before reaching consumers, often due to factors like leaky pipes or faulty meters.
“To increase revenue, the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry and SPAN will implement a comprehensive plan based on a thorough, evidence-driven strategy,” Charles told a press conference after the signing of the Action Plan to Transform Perlis’ Water Supply Services today.
He added that the financial sustainability of water operators hinged on effectively resolving the NRW issue.
States like Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang are also grappling with high NRW rates of between 50 per cent and 58 per cent, he added.
