PUTRAJAYA, Dec 17 — Preparations for the use of the country’s first electric vehicle (EV), the e.MAS 7, as the official car for Asean leaders when attending state events, are in the final stages in conjunction with Malaysia assuming Asean chairmanship next year.
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the Proton e.MAS 7, an EV produced by Proton Holdings Bhd, will be the official vehicle, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday.
“We will use e.MAS 7 at a certain level, but the other levels will also be using mostly EVs of different brands.
“Only the e.MAS 7 is the official vehicle, but there are other EVs at various levels. They are for heads of state, heads of government, ministers, officials and so on, depending on specific requests and needs,” he said at a press conference after the handover ceremony of the Guidelines for the Transition of Government Vehicles to EVs here today.
Yesterday, Anwar said the selection of e.MAS 7 as the official car for next year’s Asean meeting showed the government’s support for the production of the country’s first electric car by Proton.
It also showed the country’s commitment in promoting EV development, emphasising it is a direct and visible extension of the country’s net zero carbon emissions goals.
