Data centres to need 20.9GW of power by 2040 — Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 — The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (Petra) sees electricity supply demand for data centres to increase to 20.9GW by 2040.

Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the estimate was obtained from the Planning, Implementation and Electricity Supply and Tariff Committee Meeting, which also projected electricity demand for data centres to be around 7.7GW in 2030.

“The Peninsular Generation Development Plan 2024-2050 projection considers the development of new generation capacity for baseload including gas sources and increased generation from low carbon sources to meet the forecast demand.

“As a quick solution measure, Petra has also identified existing power plants to extend their operating period as the construction of a new gas power plant will take between four and five years to complete,” he added.

He said this when wrapping up the debate on the Supply Bill 2025 for Petra in the Dewan Negara today.

Akmal Nasrullah added that Petra is also focusing on accelerating the development of renewable energy sources. He said this is to increase the composition of low-carbon green power in the country’s electricity supply system and ensure the country can achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
