JS-SEZ deal signing delayed to January, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the signing of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) agreement on December 9 has been postponed to January.

Anwar, also finance minister, said the delay was due to Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong being down with Covid-19.

“Last night, the Prime Minister of Singapore informed me he was infected with Covid-19. Therefore, maybe the signing (of the agreement) should be postponed to January,” he told Dewan Negara when presenting the second reading of the Supply Bill 2025.

According to Anwar, the agreement would be a meaningful step in the context of Asean and Malaysia’s good relationship with Singapore.

“It will strengthen trade and investment cooperation, which we believe will boost the economy and development of Johor,” he said.

On November 28, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said the review of the draft joint JS-SEZ agreement between Malaysia and Singapore was in the final stage and will be finalised this month.
