Negeri Sembilan Health Dept detects eight suspected leptospirosis cases

SEREMBAN, Nov 29 — The Negeri Sembilan Health Department has detected eight suspected Leptospirosis cases, commonly known as rat urine disease, at the Ulu Bendul Recreational Park, as circulated on social media, said its director Datuk Dr Harlina Abdul Rashid.

One individual was admitted to the hospital for further treatment, and the other seven were given outpatient treatment.

“On November 19, the Seremban District Health Office received three notifications of suspected Leptospirosis from the Sendayan Health Clinic involving a family from Seremban with symptoms of fever, vomiting, and diarrhoea. The family visited the Ulu Bendul Recreational Park on November 10.

“It also received five more cases with similar symptoms, with a travel history to the recreational park between November 10 and November 16,” she said in a statement today.

Dr Harlina said the samples were sent to the National Public Health Laboratory in Sungai Buloh for confirmation.

Following a risk assessment, the local authorities decided to close the recreational area starting today until December 15 to carry out maintenance and clean-up work, and the relevant agencies have taken necessary control and prevention measures.

"This department will continue to monitor the latest developments of the suspected Leptospirosis outbreak and enhance preparedness in implementing preventive and control measures in collaboration with all relevant agencies," she said.

Dr Harlina also advised the public to maintain cleanliness when visiting recreational areas and to promptly seek treatment when experiencing symptoms after their visit.
