Slippery road, negligence cited in Army transporter accident

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 — Slippery road conditions and elements of negligence are believed to be among the factors which caused the accident involving an armoured vehicle transporter of the Malaysian Armed Forces on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway on November 7, said Army Chief Gen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan.

He said the findings were made by the Board of Inquiry recently.

“The Board of Inquiry identified rainy weather, which caused slippery roads, as one of the main causes of the accident, compounded by the momentum and weight of the transporter carrying two armoured vehicles.

“There was also an element of negligence, as the vehicle was driven above the speed limit specified in the standard operating procedure,” Hafizuddeain said during a press conference at Wisma Pertahanan today after a promotion ceremony for a soldier who saved four teenagers from drowning in Puncak Alam on November 24.

He added that the accident resulted in damage estimated at RM182,000, though the two armoured vehicles being transported were undamaged.

“We will not compromise on any act of negligence, whether by the driver or the convoy movement supervisor.

“We will determine appropriate actions to be taken, and those responsible will face due consequences. However, there were no criminal elements or sabotage involved in the accident,” Hafizuddeain said.

On November 7, a video went viral on social media showing the transporter skidding into the opposite lane at KM35.3 of the highway, heading towards Bentong.

The transporter was en route from the Batu 5 Camp in Mentakab, Pahang, to the Syed Sirajuddin Camp in Gemas, Negeri Sembilan.
