Digital Ministry to review National AI Office's structure

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 — The Digital Ministry will review the structure of the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO), which is scheduled to be launched on December 12, 2024.

Its minister Gobind Singh Deo said this review is necessary to ensure that Malaysia can capitalise on new technologies, particularly AI, in the future.

“We also need to look at what technologies we need and how we can attract foreign investors who can help create an ecosystem that supports our country so that we can adapt to this technology,” he said during the winding-up of the Supply Bill (Budget) 2025 debate at the committee stage for his ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Earlier, 10 MPs from both the government and Opposition blocs participated in the debate on the bill.

Gobind said that Malaysia is ready to welcome and invite foreign companies and global giants to invest in the country, while also developing a skilled workforce in the field of AI in Malaysia.

The next aspect that will be reviewed and implemented is the establishment of a system that facilitates investment, innovation, collaboration, policy formulation, and governance.

“This policy will be discussed with the industry to outline the necessary steps and the required legislation to move forward,” he said.

Gobind added that specific research studies need to be conducted to highlight the importance of establishing the NAIO, which will be under the supervision of MyDigital Corporation.
