SABAK BERNAM, Nov 27 — The Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah graced the launch of the 2024 Ban Canal Carnival at Parit 14 in Simpang Lima yesterday.

His Highness was accompanied by state executive councillor for rural development Datuk Rizam Ismail and Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI's chief executive officer Saipolyazan M. Yusop.

Tengku Amir released 10,000 juvenile Malayan river catfish (ikan baung) into the canal, as well as officiated the kayak and canoe races as a symbolic gesture to mark the event’s opening.

Following the launch, His Highness toured the government and private agency exhibition booths, engaging with exhibitors during his visit.

Tengku Amir Shah later visited the Selangor Platform (PLATS) traders' stalls, and obliged visitors’ requests for selfies before departing at 6.45pm.

Spanning six days until December 1, the carnival offers an array of exciting activities, including free health screenings, food and beverage sales, paddy field runs, and kayak marathons.

Other attractions include the sale of local agricultural produce, concerts, alongside dragon boats and traditional boats showcases.

The carnival is jointly organised by MBI, the Sabak Bernam District and Land Office, the Sabak Bernam District Council, and strategic partners like the Selangor Canoe Association.

Previously, Rizam said that last year’s carnival successfully attracted 13,889 visitors.

The Ban Canal ecotourism initiative is among 18 Projects, Programmes, and Initiatives (PPI) registered under the Sabak Bernam Development Area (Sabda) plan.
