DPM to propose public holiday for Deepavali in Sarawak

KUCHING, Nov 10 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof will propose that the Sarawak government declare Deepavali a public holiday.

He said he is aware the issue is often raised by the Hindu community in Sarawak.

“Many have voiced their wish for Deepavali in Sarawak to be recognised as a public holiday.

“I am confident the Sarawak government is aware of this, and I will personally bring it up again,” he said during his speech at a Deepavali dinner organised by Indian Association Kuching here last night.

Earlier, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg reportedly said the state government will consider the state’s Hindu community’s request to declare Deepavali a public holiday.
