PM still won’t take salary, maintains 20 pct pay cut for ministers

By Yasmin Ramlan

SHAH ALAM, Oct 18 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is steadfast in his decision to forgo his salary, a stance has maintained since he took office in November 2022.

He said the 20 per cent pay cut for ministers and political appointees will also remain.

“Ministers and political appointees (will continue being subject to) a 20 per cent pay cut, and I will continue to forgo my salary,” he said when tabling Budget 2025 at Parliament today.

During his first Cabinet meeting in 2022, Anwar said ministers had agreed to the pay cuts.

Meanwhile, he announced that under the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA), pension adjustments will be done in phases for retirees from different service groups based on their final drawn salaries, including those from the Malaysian Armed Forces.

“With consideration for the people’s struggles and financial constraints, I express my utmost gratitude to the Chief Secretary to the Government and Public Service Department director-general as due to their leadership, senior management of Turus grade have acted exemplarily by voluntarily returning their 7 per cent salary adjustment offered under the SSPA,” he said.
