War on Sugar: Govt raises 40 cents duty per litre on sweet drinks

SHAH ALAM, Oct 18 — The government has increased the excise duty on sweet drinks by 40 cents per litre as part of its "War on Sugar," effective January 1, 2025.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced this measure during the Budget 2025 tabling in the Dewan Rakyat today, stating that the funds raised will be used to increase the availability of Sodium-Glucose Transport Protein 2 inhibitors for diabetes treatment.

Additionally, the proceeds will support Peritoneal Dialysis treatment for patients suffering from kidney disease.

The government will also commit RM27 million to enhance sports and community health events, including hosting the National Sports Day.
