Govt mulls egg subsidy cut

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 9 — The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (MAFS) is reviewing subsidies for grades A, B and C chicken eggs.

Its minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the government is considering cutting the egg subsidy to save RM100 million a month, which can be redirected to develop other critical segments of agrofood sectors.

“A proposal has been submitted to the Finance Ministry and Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry,” he told the media after the monthly gathering of MAFS staff here today.

He said the country has spent more than RM3 billion since February 2022 in subsidies for chicken and chicken eggs.

The chicken subsidy was terminated on November 1 last year, after which the supply and price of chicken stabilised.

“When we made the unpopular decision of ending the chicken subsidy, many people belittled our efforts, saying the price of chicken would soar.

“Praise be to God, after the subsidy was terminated, the price of chicken no longer spiked, and, more importantly, the country benefited by saving RM100 million a month,” he said.
