SHAH ALAM, Oct 2 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) has nabbed 108 people linked to GISB Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISBH).
Jais director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the arrests were made for various syariah crimes related to religious beliefs, soliciting donations without permits, and marriage.
“This series of arrests is set to continue, with suspects who have been identified based on intelligence, complaints and information received by Jais,” he said in a statement today.
He said through the department’s investigation, several of the suspects’ practices and beliefs were deviant from the enforced fatwa.
“This includes practising beliefs that leadership is something that gives members divine grace and allows them into heaven, practising Aurad Muhammadiah, believing Abuya isn’t dead and is another plane of being, believing Abuya’s body floated because God lifted him, and that Prophet Muhammad or Abuya were present at certain ceremonies held by the group,” he said.
Shahzihan said the probe also found that marriages and divorces were handled by group leaders, while marriage rites were dictated by those leaders.
He added that the marriages were not recorded with legitimate documentation, couples were allowed to wed without permission from the Selangor Muslim People’s Registrar of Marriage, Divorce and Ruju, and polygamy was practised without permission from the Syariah Court.
“This situation has led to confusion in determining lineages, marital statuses, and the documentation of the marriages of the children’s (victims) parents, which is expected to have an impact on the rescued children as they transition into adolescence and adulthood,” he said, adding that this may lead to fasid (irregular) marriages or wati' syubhah (children born out of wedlock).
He said Jais is working with the Social Welfare Department, National Registration Department, and other agencies to identify relatives of most of the kids rescued through Op Global.
