KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 — Malaysia will witness a monsoon transition phase starting September 24, which is expected to bring about thunderstorms nationwide that have the potential to cause flash floods, the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said today.
The beginning of the phase signals the end of the southwest monsoon that has been active since May 17.
MetMalaysia said the transition is expected to last until early November, during which period weak winds from multiple directions will create favourable conditions for thunderstorms.
These storms, often accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds, are likely to occur in the late afternoons and early evenings.
The department said this will especially affect the western and inland areas of Peninsular Malaysia, as well as western Sabah and the western and central regions of Sarawak.
“These weather conditions could lead to flash floods, fallen trees, and potential damage to weaker structures,’’ it said in a statement today.
The public is urged to remain alert and keep updated with the latest weather forecasts and warnings through MetMalaysia's official channels, including its website, the myCuaca mobile app, and social media platforms.
