SEPANG, Sept 5 — The government will emphasise several sectors in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), including education, health and a balanced economy.
Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said the country’s five-year master plan will prepare to transition the country to a balanced society, considering changes that come with an ageing population.
It was reported that by 2030, Malaysia’s elderly population (those aged 60 and above) is projected to increase drastically to 5.3 million people, or more than 15 per cent of the country’s population. In 2040, it is estimated that one in five Malaysians will be elderly.
“There are several important pivots that are already underway. The energy transition is part and parcel of major government policy, as are megatrends involving digital and automation.
“In terms of changes in the economic structure, the direction we are heading in started even before the 13MP, so the response from our economic stakeholders is good.
“That allows us to focus on things that form the basis of the strength needed in the future,” he told the media after attending a conference on the 13MP here today.
In his speech earlier, Rafizi said his ministry will organise engagement sessions and focus groups in all states from the end of this month as part of its Madani Mendengar programme.
The engagement sessions are a means for the ministry to gather constructive feedback.
