KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 — A total of 1,656 Kuala Lumpur police contingent personnel will ensure public order at four hotspots on Merdeka Eve on Friday.
The four hotspots are Merdeka Square, Bukit Bintang, Tun Razak Exchange, and the Kuala Lumpur City Centre areas.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said of the total, 116 traffic policemen would be assigned to ensure smooth traffic in the city and to curb illegal street racing.
“Our objective is to ensure everyone who visits these locations to celebrate Merdeka Eve can join the celebration safely without any untoward incidents.”
He said this on Bernama TV’s Apa Khabar Malaysia programme today.
Meanwhile, Rusdi advised road users to obey traffic laws, including in parking their vehicles in permitted areas, when attending the Merdeka celebration at Putrajaya Square on Saturday.
He encouraged people to use public transport provided by the organisers, including six water taxis and three cruise boats, as well as 80 shuttle buses, which will operate from 4am to 2pm on Saturday to reduce traffic congestion.
“Road users are reminded not to park their vehicles at their whim and fancy as this will turn the two-lane road into one lane and cause traffic congestion.
“Traffic summonses may be issued in the most extreme circumstances, such as for drivers who block the traffic. If necessary, we may prepare a truck to tow their vehicles,” he added.
