KUCHING, Aug 22 — Selangor will start preparing to host the 22nd Malaysian Games in 2026 as soon as the current Sarawak edition ends.
State executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said Selangor’s athlete training and development programmes will be improved.
“After returning from Sarawak, we will start preparing not only to host, but to develop athletes based on performances here (Sarawak).
“Athletes’ weaknesses and strengths will continue to be identified before development programmes for Sukma 2026 are drawn up,” Najwan said when met at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association here today.
On Sukma 2024 achievements so far, he said Selangor is on the right track to finish in the top three.
“We just have to make sure our athletes are focused and give their best for the rest of the remaining three days of the championship.
“Today, there are several more final events for rugby, boxing, aquatics and athletics with gold up for grabs,” he said.
On July 18, the Malaysian Sports High-Level Committee decided Selangor would host Sukma 2026.
This decision came after Selangor offered to replace the National Sports Council, which was supposed to be the organiser based on the turn-based hosting system.
The last time Selangor hosted the prestigious event was in 1998.
