Sukma Day 9: Selangor ends day with 19 gold

SHAH ALAM, Aug 20 — As the curtain closes on the ninth day of the 2024 Malaysian Games (Sukma), Selangor is ranked fourth in the medal tally with 19 gold, 33 silver and 26 bronze, for a total of 78 medals, behind Sarawak, the Federal Territories, and Terengganu.

At 10.40pm, the men’s petanque doubles team won the day’s last gold at the Santubong Petanque Arena, Kuching. They beat Perlis (silver) and Penang (bronze).

At 8.32pm, decathlete Muhammad Arif Najdat Hassan clinched silver with 6,113 points.

At 8.25pm, Adelia Nur Irwan Syazalee scored bronze in the women’s bowling women’s masters. 

At 7.26pm, weightlifter Muhammad Adam Mukhriz Mohd Hafidz managed 257kg (snatch 11kg, clean and jerk 146kg) to earn silver.

At Sarawak Stadium, Sasha Alyssa Philip won bronze in the women’s discus throw, with a distance of 37.62m, with runner C. Taarini also earning bronze in the women’s 1,500m after clocking 4:58.52s.

The women’s 4x400m runners meanwhile clinched bronze, clocking 4:01.81s.

At 7.20pm, Another gold was added to the state’s collection through the mixed 4x100m medley team comprising Teoh Khar Chuan, Andrew Goh Zheng Yen, Lim Shun Qi and Khew Zi Xian.

At 6.50pm, swimmer Henry Goh Li Hen added a silver to Selangor’s tally through the men’s 200m individual medley. He earned a silver and a bronze yesterday.

However, teammate Andrew Goh, who broke the national record for the men’s 100m breaststroke yesterday, finished eighth.

At 6.04pm, swimmers Jayden Goh Lie Jie and Loke Yiew Jien hauled silver and bronze for Selangor in the men’s 100m freestyle, while Lim Shun Qi earned silver in the women’s 50m individual butterfly.

At 5.24pm, swimmer Khew Zi Xian clinched gold in the women’s 100m freestyle with a time of 58.36s.

Meanwhile, Aslan Adnan earned Selangor another bronze through the men’s 200m backstroke, clocking 2:11.44s.

For the hurdles event, Yee Teng Lie won gold in the women's 100m category at Stadium Sarawak in Kuching at 3.20pm, coming in at 14.28s.

For weightlifting, Muhammad Adam Mukhriz Mohd Hafidz won silver in the men's below-67 kg category at 12pm at Dewan Sukan Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan in Betong, earning 257 points.

By noon, M. Harini also earned bronze in the women's kuthu varisai at the same venue, logging 7.77 points.

At 11am, during the men's kuthu varisai for silambam at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre in Kuching, S. Kahlisswaran earned bronze for his efforts, with 8.10 points.

At 10am, the state's mixed team of Wong Vin Sean and Ho Lo Ee won gold in their match against the Federal Territories' Chen Low Han and Qiao Shi Odelia Wong at the Sibu Indoor Stadium.

Meanwhile, shuttler K. Letshanaa won gold in the women's singles match against the Federal Territory's Kay Xin Lee at the Sibu Indoor Stadium.

The first silver of the day was won by silat exponents Ikmal Fahmi Ashar and Ikmal Fahri Ashar in the men's ganda event at 8.30am at Bandaraya Stadium, Miri.

After a slow start in the biennial Sukma, Selangor is gaining ground, just as state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrenpreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi predicted.

Notable wins today included Nur Afrina Batrisyia, who broke the Sukma record in the women's 200m sprint and clinched gold, after smashing the 100m sprint record yesterday.

Over a week into Sukma 2024, Selangor has garnered medals in a number of events, including wushu, lawn bowls, karate, golf, tenpin bowling, and swimming.
