KUALA LANGAT, Aug 19 — The rich culture of the indigenous Mah Meri tribe received royal recognition today as Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj launched a book dedicated to preserving the traditions of the Orang Asli community.
Moyang: Spirit of Carey Island, authored by Orang Asli expert Rashid Esa, chronicles the intricate wood carvings and cultural practices of the Mah Meri community, which has earned 22 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation recognitions for craftsmanship.
Speaking at the launch, His Royal Highness congratulated Rashid, who is also Mah Meri Cultural Village director, for the book, which he said will serve as a guide to advance the Orang Asli community.
“I understand that the Mah Meri people settled on Pulau Carey over 300 years ago. The traditions, artistic elements and beliefs of this community are meticulously recorded in this book as a reference for future generations.
“I hope this book, along with craft products and tourism, will give further recognition to the Mah Meri tribe and subsequently enhance their economy and standard of living,” he said at the Amverton Cove Golf and Island Resort on Pulau Carey here today.

Sultan Sharafuddin was accompanied by Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin.
Also present were Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, and his wife Masdiana Muhammad.
Earlier, the royals visited booths showcasing Mah Meri crafts and watched a traditional dance performance.
Meanwhile, Sultan Sharafuddin expressed hope the 190-page book will provide the public with insights into the unique aspects of the Orang Asli community and attract the interest of historians and art enthusiasts.
“I believe that every Orang Asli community in the country has its own customs, traditions and art that are still unknown to the public.
“Other Orang Asli groups, such as the Temuan, Negrito and Senoi, should have similar books so their traditions and arts are preserved and appreciated,” he said.
