KLANG, Aug 8 — Several flood-prone areas in Meru are expected to see relief when the local flood mitigation project is completed in 2029.
Meru assemblyman Mariam Abdul Rashid said the RM220 million project, which began in May, involves high-risk areas including Jalan Hamzah Alang, Fairy Park, Sungai Binjai and Sungai Palong.
She said the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) manages the project with funds from the federal government.
“The water retention pond project that started earlier this year is set to be completed by 2029,” she said when met at an event at Econsave here today.

In the short term, Mariam said, her office, in collaboration with JPS and the Public Works Department, will ensure frequent maintenance of drains in Meru.
“We are confident that once the flood mitigation project is complete, the likelihood of flooding in the affected areas will be greatly reduced, and residents will no longer need to worry,” she said.
Mariam also urged the Klang Royal City Council (MDBK) to upgrade drains in Taman Daya Maju as soon as possible due to frequent floods.
“This is because, in this area, even with low rainfall, it takes less than 24 hours for water to inundate nearby homes.
“The drains here are over 20 years old and can no longer handle large volumes of water. Praise be to God, I have been informed that the MBDK has tendered this project, and upgrades will be carried out soon,” she said.
