Sabah CM backs federal govt’s firm stance to defend national sovereignty

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 5 — The Sabah government fully supports the federal government’s firm stand in defending the country’s sovereignty and dismissing any demand over Sabah, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor.

He said as Sabahans chose to jointly form the Malaysian Federation through the Malaysia Agreement 1963, any external claims over Sabah will not be recognised.

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has made Malaysia’s stand clear, which is similar to our stand all this while,” he said in a statement here today.

On July 29, the Foreign Affairs Ministry reiterated the government’s long-standing position that Sabah has always been an integral part of Malaysia, and any claims over Sabah will not be recognised.

The ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said in a statement that it is aware of a video circulating on social media containing baseless and misleading content that questions Sabah’s sovereignty as an integral part of Malaysia.

Hajiji said the state government fully supports Wisma Putra’s statement that the viral video contained baseless and misleading content.

“We are confident the Foreign Affairs Ministry can investigate the matter thoroughly in cooperation with relevant ministries and agencies,” he said.

He also reiterated Sabah has always been an integral part of Malaysia, and that the United Nations and the international community recognise Sabah as part of this country, since the formation of the Malaysian Federation on September 16, 1963.
