ICJ to issue advisory opinion on consequences of Israeli occupation

THE HAGUE, July 14 — The International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced that it will issue an advisory opinion on legal consequences related to Israeli actions in occupied Palestinian territories during the next week.

“On Friday, July 19, 2024, the ICJ will deliver its advisory opinion in respect of the legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem,” it said in a statement, according to Palestine News and Info Agency (Wafa).

“A public sitting will take place at 3pm at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the seat of the Court, during which Judge Nawaf Salam, President of the Court, will read out the advisory opinion,” it added.

On December 30, 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution requesting the ICJ to give an advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories since 1967, how the policies and practices of Israel affect the legal status of the occupation, and what are the legal consequences that arise for all states and the UN from this status.

Death toll surges

Meanwhile, Israeli occupation forces committed four massacres against families in the Gaza Strip over the last 24 hours, resulting in the documented killing of at least 61 Palestinians and the injury of 129 others, according to medical sources.

According to Wafa, local health authorities confirmed that the Palestinian death toll from the Israeli onslaught since October 7 has risen to 38,443 reported fatalities, with an additional 88,481 individuals sustaining injuries.

The majority of the victims are women and children.

It reported that around 10.30am (local time), Israeli warplanes launched several massive airstrikes targeting the densely populated Al-Mawasi area, which is home to displaced residents from all across the Gaza Strip.

The death toll of the horrific Israeli massacre in the Al-Mawasi area has risen sharply, with more than 71 people confirmed dead and over 289 injured, including many in critical condition.

Ambulance and rescue teams are still unable to reach many casualties and dead bodies trapped under the rubble or scattered on roads across the war-torn enclave, as Israeli occupation forces continue to obstruct the movement of ambulance and civil defence crews.
