Singapore to halt new diesel car, taxi registrations next year

SINGAPORE, July 10 — Singapore will cease registering new diesel cars and taxis on January 1, 2025, aligning with its goal for cleaner energy vehicles by 2040.

The Land Transport Authority has announced that existing diesel cars registered before January 1, 2025, can still renew their Certificate of Entitlement, but they will face increased road taxes as a disincentive to discourage renewal.

"Starting from January 1, 2025, new diesel car and taxi registrations will no longer be allowed.

"With cleaner energy alternatives now widely available, the proportion of new diesel car and taxi registrations has remained below one per cent since 2021," it said in a statement today.

The matter was first announced at a Parliament session in March 2021.

However, these restrictions will not apply to the import and registration of cars under the Classic Vehicle Scheme and the Vintage Vehicle Scheme.
