KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — Four national professional athletes bound for the Paris Olympics will receive a grant of RM300,000 from the Youth and Sports Ministry.
The grant will be disbursed through the National Sports Council to shuttlers Lee Zi Jia (men’s singles) and Goh Jin Wei (women’s singles), as well as golfers Gavin Green and Ashley Lau Jen Wen.
The council said in a statement that the aid is an initiative to ease athletes’ participation in qualifiers, exposure tournaments and training camps, as well as support services to ensure they are in top shape for the Games.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the additional aid would help them focus on preparations and give their best in their quest for success in Paris.
“This is our commitment to help every athlete who carries the Malaysian flag, that they will not only receive support services from the NSI (National Sports Institute) team but also financial assistance from the government. We want athletes to know they will go (to Paris) with the full support of the government and people of Malaysia,” she said in the same statement.
Twenty-six athletes will represent Malaysia at the Paris Games.
