AUG 2024: Malaysia dominate women's shot put

MALANG, July 3 — The national athletics squad contributed a gold and a silver at the Asean University Games 2024 in the women's shot put event today.

The gold medal was won by Nani Sahirah Maryata who proved her strength with a powerful throw of 15.20m in the event at the Universitas Negeri Surabaya's (UNESA) Athletics Arena.

Malaysia continued to dominate the women's shot put, with the silver medal going to Nurrul Ainin Syauqina Mohd Nor Azahar, who recorded a distance of 12.48m, while the bronze medal was won by Jamela De Asis from the Philippines, with a throw of 11.69m.

The gold medal won by Nani Sahirah is the third contributed by the athletics team since the athletics competition began yesterday.

This follows national discus thrower Queenie Ting Kung Ni defending her gold medal won in Ubon Ratchathani with a distance of 45.23m, and Andre Anura Anuar also capturing the gold medal in the men's long jump with a leap of 7.46m.

Meanwhile, Nani Sahirah said that despite winning the gold medal, she acknowledged that there is still much improvement needed, especially with the SEA Games coming up next year.

"It is not the time for me to feel comfortable now, but I need to continue making improvements. The period until the SEA Games is not long.

"For this competition, I wanted to break the record, but with today's gold, I am very grateful. There are still aspects I need to improve for the future," she told the press after the event.
