Kelantan Speaker declares Nenggiri seat vacant

KOTA BHARU, June 19 — The Nenggiri seat was declared vacant today by Kelantan State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah.

He said the decision was made after the assembly received a written notice under Clause 3 of Article 31A of the State Constitution from Nenggiri assemblyman Mohd Azizi Abu Naim on June 13.

He said Bersatu on June 12 informed the assembly that Azizi’s party membership had been revoked, rendering his seat vacant..

“Therefore, I declare in accordance with Clause 1, Article 31A, that there is an unexpected vacancy in the Nenggiri seat represented by Azizi,” he said in a special press conference at his office at Kota DarulNaim Complex here today.

Amar said according to Clause 4(4), Article 31A, the vacant seat must be filled within 60 days from the date the Election Commission receives the vacancy notice.

Amar said the matter involves the development of the Nenggiri seat, after Mohd Azizi, who is also Gua Musang MP, pledged support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“In Kelantan, we are confident we can retain victory in Gua Musang and Nenggiri, while the candidate will be determined by the top leaders of the party.”

Previously, the media reported that Bersatu revoked the membership of six MPs and one assemblyman with immediate effect, after they failed to respond to a letter from party’s supreme council to pledge allegiance to the party.

They were Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, Jeli MP Zahari Kechik, Gua Musang MP and Nenggiri assemblyman Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid, Labuan MP Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman, Tanjong Karang MP Datuk Zulkafperi Hanapi, and Selat Klang assemblyman Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari.
